Ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is doubling down on its summer routes but adding two recent services to Puerto Rico. The airline has been flying to the US territory for over twenty years and has several flights to the Caribbean island on its network.

Passengers within the US trying to travel to Puerto Rico this summer will now have more options, with Spirit Airlines adding two recent routes to its network. In response to The Points Guy, of the seven recent routes Spirit is launching in May, two are to Puerto Rico.

The budget carrier said that it’s planning to start out flights to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Texas on May 8 and Louis Armstrong Latest Orleans International Airport (MSY) in Louisiana on May 9.
Its other recent additions include 4 flights originating from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) – as discussed within the article below – and one each day nonstop service from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to Latest York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) starting May 8.

Puerto Rico sees strong demand all through the 12 months from US mainland, with all major carriers operating flights to the island. Spirit itself has been flying there for greater than 20 years and added five recent Puerto Rico services last 12 months.

Within the last 12 months, the carrier has also left Aguadilla and Mercedita (Puerto Rico), Lima (Peru), Los Cabos (Mexico), Monterrey, Yeager – Charleston, Bucaramanga (Colombia), and Puerto Vallarta (Mexico).
Just a few days ago, Spirit also welcomed its tenth Airbus A321neo aircraft and its third up to now in 2024. It operates an all-Airbus fleet but plans to retire its A319s by 2025 because it expands its A320neo fleet.

Spirit’s merger with JetBlue was blocked by a US judge in January, which was an enormous blow to the carrier’s future plans, and the 2 airlines have now urged the courts to reconsider the choice. Each carriers’ merger plans were thwarted amid growing government resentment towards airline mergers and partnerships, that are viewed as potentially anti-competitive.
