Australian flag carrier Qantas has resumed its Brisbane to Wellington connection after an absence of over eight years on October twenty eighth. The Aussie-based carrier will serve the pair every day, deploying the Embraer 190, a primary for Latest Zealand, which has not seen an everyday service of such an aircraft. The primary flight was met with a conventional water salute by the Wellington Airport Fire Service.
QF’s move firmly solidifies the airline as essentially the most significant international carrier for the Latest Zealand capital, which already sees a double every day service to Sydney and a every day service to Melbourne. Introducing the Brisbane service will represent 450,000 seats every year from WLG for the carrier, up 23% from pre-COVID numbers. Qantas’ low-cost offshoot, Jetstar, is already present in connecting the nation’s capital to Queensland, with multiple services per week between Wellington and the Gold Coast (OOL). It’s trying to increase this service by 20% over the Southern Hemisphere summer.
Competition for Air Latest Zealand
Filling the void by the still absent Virgin Australia, Air Latest Zealand serves the WLG-BNE route with its Airbus A321neo every day. Virgin Australia, during its peak of Latest Zealand operations, had served the route as much as twice every day. Qantas’ resumption of the service, some eight years after its last visit, has been welcomed by local businesses and the airport itself, with the carrier reiterating:
“Latest Zealand is a necessary a part of the Qantas Group network. We’ve been flying across Tasman for greater than 50 years, and with greater than 200 return flights available between Qantas and Jetstar each week, we’re offering more seats for Kiwi travelers than we did before COVID.”
Matt Clarke, Cheif Executive of Wellington Airport, also commented:
“For travellers, this implies improved selection, competition, and connections. “International connectivity is more necessary than ever as Latest Zealand works to get the economy back as much as full speed. Qantas is doing an ideal job to attach Wellingtonians, and we are able to’t wait to see local travellers and international visitors getting onboard at Wellington Airport this summer and beyond.”
