With the height summer holiday getaway just across the corner, easyJet has announced that it’s cutting 1,700 flights during July, August, and September operating from London Gatwick Airport.
Cancellations are coming on the worst time
With schools within the UK breaking up for the summer in around two weeks, easyJet has announced that it should cancel 1,700 flights on the airline’s busiest UK operating base at London Gatwick Airport.

Following several weeks during which the airline has canceled lots of of flights to and from the airport on the last minute, easyJet has now taken the choice to tell 180,000 passengers that their departures in the course of the three affected months is not going to operate.
Why so many flights?
Explaining why it’s being forced to take such drastic motion in the course of the summer peak, the airline has claimed that “” air-traffic control delays are responsible. While the airline claims it’s fully crewed and has more pilots and cabin crew flying than ever, air traffic control delays are actually 3 times longer than before the pandemic.
The pressure on Gatwick, the world’s busiest single-runway airport, is felt much more by easyJet, which operates around half of the airport’s total movements – greater than every other carrier.

Over this past weekend alone, easyJet grounded greater than 40 flights to and from Gatwick on Saturday, affecting greater than 6,000 passengers. On Sunday, dozens more easyJet departures were cut, including flights to the important thing Spanish holiday airports of Malaga, Barcelona, and Alicante.
In keeping with the Independent newspaper, passengers waiting at Gatwick for the last Belfast International flight of the day on Sunday evening, plus those in Budapest waiting for his or her flight back to London, had their trips canceled while waiting on the departure gate.
Explaining the cancellations, a spokesperson for easyJet said,
“We’re currently operating as much as around 1,800 flights and carrying around 250,000 customers per day, and like all airlines, we review our flights on an ongoing basis. As Eurocontrol has stated, the entire industry is seeing difficult conditions this summer with more constrained air space because of the war in Ukraine, leading to unprecedented air-traffic control delays, in addition to further potential ATC strike motion.”
The spokesperson continued,
“Now we have due to this fact made some pre-emptive adjustments to our program, consolidating a small variety of flights at Gatwick, where we have now multiple each day frequencies, to be able to help mitigate these external challenges on the day of travel for our customers. Customers whose flights are affected are being informed, with 95% cent of shoppers being rebooked onto an alternate flight and all customers supplied with the choice to rebook or receive a refund. We’re sorry for any inconvenience that this may increasingly have caused.”
Passengers rebooked where possible
EasyJet has stated that the cancellations being made represent roughly the equivalent of in the future’s value of flights. It can proceed to operate about 90,000 journeys over the period. While the carrier has managed to rebook 95% of affected passengers on other services operated by the airline, 9,000 passengers are currently left and not using a alternative.
Under European air passenger regulations, passengers whose flights are canceled are entitled to travel on every other airline with seats available on the unique day of travel at easyJet’s expense.

Those passengers who’ve travel plans canceled with lower than two weeks’ notice are also entitled to money compensation of £220 (US$280) or £350 ($445) for flights above 1,500km unless easyJet can rebook them on a flight that arrives near the unique time.
Nonetheless, finding alternative flights on other carriers so late within the day will likely cost excess of this for those left to hunt alternative flights themselves.
One other troubled summer?
After three summer seasons where easyJet passengers have been severely affected by pandemic-related restrictions and staff shortages, the airline hoped that this summer would prove to be trouble-free for itself and its customers.
