Saab announced the CB90CX, a new Combat Boat 90 variant designed for uncrewed operation. Saab representative Anders Hellman said the vessel was designed from the outset to operate without an onboard crew.
Key details
- The CB90CX measures 18 meters long.
- Saab says its larger hull provides more than 50% greater payload capacity than the CB90 NG.
- Reported systems include ship automation and monitoring, fire control, and steer-by-wire technology.
- Saab outlined three proposed configurations: intelligence and surveillance, anti-ship warfare, and short-range air defense.
- The proposed intelligence and surveillance version would use Saab's Giraffe 1X radar.
- The short-range air-defense configuration may use an automatic anti-aircraft cannon intended to engage aerial threats, including uncrewed aircraft.
- The Swedish Navy is the launch customer, and Saab has the boat in production for the service.
Saab says the CB90CX increases payload capacity by more than 50% compared with the CB90 NG.
Why it matters
The CB90CX extends Saab's Combat Boat 90 family with an uncrewed design and proposed roles spanning surveillance, anti-ship warfare, and short-range air defense. Its reported payload increase over the CB90 NG gives operators more capacity for mission equipment.
