The RAF Protector RG1 carried out its first operational sorties in UK airspace, supporting Royal Navy monitoring of Russian naval activity, according to reporting that cited the UK Ministry of Defence.
Key details
- The Ministry of Defence said Protector provided more than 10 hours of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance coverage for maritime tasking.
- Protector flew alongside Royal Navy ships and helicopters operating in or near UK waters.
- HMS Dauntless and HMS Tyne monitored the Russian frigate Neustrashimy in the English Channel from 1 to 14 October. The reported monitoring also included merchant vessels associated with the frigate.
- The RAF Protector RG1 is based on General Atomics’ MQ-9B SkyGuardian, an aircraft designed for extended-range operations with endurance exceeding 40 hours.
- RAF Waddington serves as Protector’s base. UK-based RAF crews will operate the aircraft, which may deploy elsewhere for maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and military assistance to civil authorities.
- The Ministry of Defence said Royal Navy monitoring of Russian movements rose by 25% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Protector provided more than 10 hours of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance coverage for maritime tasking.
Why it matters
