Staying in a single job with the identical employer for any serious length of time is becoming a rarity in today’s gig economy. That is definitely not the case with one Air Latest Zealand flight attendant who’s about to wear the uniform for the last time after greater than half a century on the job.
What stories he could tell
Air Latest Zealand flight attendant Ron Twine is in the midst of his last tour of duty, a return service between Auckland and Vancouver, Canada, before ending his 53-year profession with the airline. He joined the Kiwi carrier as a fresh-faced twenty-one-year-old in 1970, getting into the flight steward role that might see him travel the world until his retirement next week.

The mathematicians on the market have worked out that Twine is now 74 so it’s equally impressive that he’s ending his profession on NZ23, a thirteen-hour Boeing 787-9 long-haul flight from Vancouver to Auckland that can touch down on Monday. There is no sign of slowing up or biding his time on a couple of Auckland-Wellington domestic jaunts, so it’s off on certainly one of the airline’s longest sectors for this septuagenarian.

The last word goes to Air Latest Zealand General Manager Cabin Crew Viv Vincent, who said:
What a shocking farewell for a man who has spent 53 years serving Air Latest Zealand and its passengers and right to the tip has his hand up for a nonstop trans-Pacific flight. Ron Twine officially retires from the airline on June twenty third and the word is that he’s swapping his tray for a set of golf clubs.
