Summary
- Vietnam Airlines’ latest Perth route will operate three weekly using the Boeing 787-9
- It’ll join VietJet from Ho Chi Minh City
- It is an element of the unprecedented growth in service between Vietnam and Australia
Shortly after Vietjet announced the first-ever flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Perth, the airport pair has one other carrier: Vietnam Airlines. While the Vietnamese city was Perth’s third-largest unserved Asian market in the primary half of 2023, flights have risen from zero to 5 weekly – an incredible amount in little or no time. It’s the most recent a part of the unprecedented growth between the 2 countries.
Vietnam Airlines adds Perth
Taking off from the carrier’s homeland on December seventh and on the eighth from Australia, the route can be served three weekly using the Boeing 787-9. Now available to book, it’s scheduled as follows, with all times local:
- Ho Chi Minh City to Perth: VN791, 15:50-23:05 (6h 15m block time);
- Perth to Ho Chi Minh City: VN790, 00:50-06:10 (6h 20m);

It’ll begin just over two weeks after Vietjet launches on November twenty first. Unlike the flag carrier, Vietjet will use the A321neo, meaning far lower trip costs, fewer seats to fill, and better seat-mile costs. The A321neo cruises at slower speeds, so the longer block time. Notice that the outbound flight will – not coincidentally – mainly operate on the times as Vietnam Airines:
- Ho Chi Minh City to Perth: VJ89, 13:35-21:20 (6h 45m);
- Perth to Ho Chi Minh City: VJ80 , 23:20-05:05+1 (6h 45m);
Perth to Vietnam
Each carriers’ Western Australia service will revolve to an excellent degree around connections over Ho Chi Minh City. For instance, passengers flying Vietnam Airlines can connect with 15+ destinations with competitive transit times, including Bangkok – now not served from Perth and an enormous market – and Seoul.

In fact, it can particularly be about wider Vietnam. In accordance with booking data, an estimated 37,000 roundtrip passengers flew Perth-Vietnam in the primary half of 2023 (204 each day), with the carriers easily in a position to stimulate demand.

Vietnam was Western Australia’s fourth-largest unserved country market in these six months, behind India, Thailand, and Japan. (All Nippon resumes Tokyo in October, while the others remain unserved.) Vietnam was particularly driven by diaspora and students and Australian tourists to the nice Southeast Asian nation.
Ho Chi Minh was the most important unserved Vietnamese market in January-June and the third-largest in Asia after Bangkok and Tokyo Narita. It had greater than twice the passengers of Hanoi.
Vietnam-Australia seats up by 155% vs. 2019
Within the Southern Hemisphere summer season (SS), winter within the Northern Hemisphere, OAG shows that there are 735,000 roundtrip non-stop seats on the market.
In what’s one in all the world’s fastest-growing long-haul markets, capability has risen by a unprecedented 446,000 versus 2019 (+155%) and by 416,000 previous high in 2018 (+131%). It raises the apparent and necessary query of the sustainability of such quick and big expansion.

The market saw the entry of Bamboo Airways in 2022 and VietJet in 2023, joining incumbents Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar. They’ve 14 routes between them, up from just five in SS19. Then, only Sydney and Melbourne were served, now joined by Brisbane and Perth.
