Smoke blanketing the Northeast because of wildfires burning in Canada has prompted some airlines within the US to waive change fees for passengers flying to and from airports within the region. A whole lot of wildfires burning to the north in Canada’s provinces have created hazy and orange skies, affecting the air quality for over 100 million Americans.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) modified operations at Recent York LaGuardia Airport on Thursday because of the smoke. Greater than 100 flights were canceled, and nearly 2,000 were delayed.

Ensuring it’s secure to fly
The announcement comes because the FAA reportedly forecasted delays and cancelations at several major airports within the Northeast region, including Newark Liberty International Airport, Recent York John F. Kennedy International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Ronald Regan Washington National Airport.
LaGuardia Airport experienced significant delays on Thursday because the FAA issued a ground stop for inbound flights. The order was lifted later within the afternoon, around 14:00. Because of this of the damaging smoke, 120 flights were canceled as of 14:45 on Thursday, with one other 1,928 flights delayed, in keeping with CNN.
In an interview with MSNBC, US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said safety is the highest priority amongst the continued flight issues.
“There’s excellent coordination happening between the airlines, the FAA, to attempt to make sure that that those issues are being taken in stride, that the delays will be accommodated, done, as efficiently as possible. And, after all, most significantly of all, the highest priority any time we face any disruption or the rest impacting the system is at all times going to be safety. Even when which means things must go more slowly, the FAA goes to make sure that that each flight goes safely.”
