United Airlines is rolling out latest lobby signage at select airports after running a three-step trial in Chicago.
Improving visuals
Chicago-based United Airlines is once more hoping to enhance its passenger experience, this time, rolling out latest signage in airport lobbies. After receiving passenger feedback that its airport signage was not superb, United decided to make changes. For several months, the airline ran tests with latest signage at Chicago O’Hare International Airport and is now able to begin a wider rollout.
Based on Dan Mack, United’s Director of Self Service Products, tests were run in three phases. They began with the naming, i.e., ‘self-tagged bag drop,’ ‘bag-drop shortcut,’ and ‘additional services.’ United then tested the icons for every service and added colours to every. Linda Jojo, United’s Chief Customer Officer, said,
“It’s one other example of how we’re really mixing the physical experience our customers have with the digital experience they’re having through the United app.”
Suesan Chen, Senior Manager of Brand, highlighted the importance of getting distinctive colours to make things easy for passengers in busy and chaotic airport lobbies. The colours used are pastel, with lighter blue, pink, green, and others featured on the brand new signs. This aligns with the updated branding that United has slowly rolled out throughout its website, app, and even screens in airport terminals.
Other passenger experience improvements
United has invested significantly in its passenger experience, and it shows. The airline has by far the very best airline app in the USA, from user interface to experience and tools available. Last 12 months, United became the primary, and to today, the one airline to have live activities available for iPhone users.
The feature, unveiled in May last 12 months, shows live updates for flights without notifications, including countdowns to boarding time, closing time for boarding, gate information, flight status, and more. While phones are unlocked, the dynamic island (on newer iPhone models) also shows much of the data listed above.

United Airlines Rolls Out Live Activities Features For iPhones
United is the primary carrier to roll out latest features to sync with Apple’s Live Activities.
Late last week, Charles Hong, a Product Owner on United’s Digital Signage team, shared on LinkedIn that United had began testing a feature that translated flight information on airport screens for international flights.
The brand new feature was tested at United’s hub at George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport on flight 1024 to Mexico City. The photo of the gate information display shows several items translated into Spanish and others listed side-by-side with English text. It will surely be a game changer for international travelers who don’t speak English and have difficulty navigating US airports.

Discover some handy tricks to make the airport experience more enjoyable.
While not widely discussed, United has significantly improved the passenger experience when delays and/or cancelations occur. While the airline has offered rebooking options in its app for a while, it also offers hotel booking decisions for those with interruptions because of airline fault, transportation vouchers to and from hotels, and meal vouchers, all through the app. All these features eliminate the necessity to wait in long customer support lines at airports.
