This winter, more widebody aircraft will probably be used between the US and the ever-popular Cancun. It’s because of United Airlines, which is able to fly the Boeing 777-200 (non-ER) triple each day to the Mexican resort, replacing narrowbodies. When writing, 777s are only scheduled to operate from the tip of October to the tip of November, but this may occasionally change.
Triple each day Cancun 777 flights
United will deploy three class, 364-seat aircraft on the next routes. These have 234 seats in economy, 102 in economy plus, and 28 in Polaris. They replace 179-seat aircraft, providing greater than double the capability per flight. As United has not reduced frequencies, November seats on the market on these three routes have risen by 30% versus last week.

All but Denver has a history
United just isn’t a stranger to using twin aisles to Cancun, although they’ve not been massively used. In line with Cirium data, Chicago saw the 777 from November 2017 to March 2020, then from November-December 2020. Houston did so in March 2020. Nonetheless, it can be the primary time it has used the equipment – or any widebody – to Cancun from its Denver hub.

Cancun’s latest leading widebody carrier
United will probably be Cancun’s leading widebody operator by each flights and seats in November. Nonetheless, not by available seat miles/km, owing to the relatively short cross-border distances. Naturally, long-haul carriers lead by this metric.
flights, United’s 81 November widebody departures have overtaken Air Canada’s 77. The carrier plans to make use of the 777-300ER from Toronto, A330-300 from Montreal, and 787-8 from Vancouver. Only Vancouver will probably be exclusively by twin aisles in November.

United’s latest shortest twin-aisle route
Houston to Cancun becomes United’s shortest international twin-aisle flight in November. Some 811 miles (1,305 km), it is almost 4 times shorter than what was to be primary: Houston to Lima, at 3,133 (5,042 km). (I excluded San Juan flights as Puerto Rico is a US territory and regarded domestic.)
It’s even starker in comparison to United’s other 777 international flights. Until the most recent schedule upload, Newark to Paris CDG was to cover the least distance, at 3,649 miles (5,872 km). Houston-Cancun is, due to this fact, about 4 and a half times shorter.

Furthermore, Houston-Cancun covers less distance than United’s shortest widebody route in November: Houston-Denver. There are only 51 miles (82 km) in it, but obviously good enough.
