Thai Airways, trading as THAI, has continued to make deals on the Singapore Airshow, with the airline now announcing a lease agreement with the aircraft lessor AerCap for 17 aircraft. The deal includes leasing single and twin-aisle jets.
More widebody aircraft
In response to the joint announcement, THAI will lease 4 Airbus A350-900, two of which have already been delivered, three Boeing 787-9, and ten Airbus A321neo aircraft. The 2 remaining A350-900s can be delivered in the subsequent six months.
Meanwhile, Boeing is scheduled to deliver the primary leased 787-9 to THAI via AerCap in Q2 2024, with the remaining deliveries happening through Q4 2025. In response to the lessor, Airbus is scheduled to deliver all ten A321neo aircraft between Q3 2025 and Q2 2026.

Reports Suggest Airbus Is Forecasting Delivery Delays In Late 2024
Airbus’ latest update expressed optimism within the manufacturer’s ability to deliver more aircraft in 2024 than in 2023.
Peter Anderson, the chief industrial officer (CCO) of AerCap, said that the lessor was delighted to finally announce this transaction with THAI, supporting the airline’s modernization plans within the short and long-haul segments with latest aircraft.
Second order announced in the course of the Singapore Airshow
The deal was announced on the second day of the Singapore Airshow, marking the second day of activity for the de facto flag carrier of Thailand. On the primary day of the event, the airline ordered 45 Boeing 787-9 aircraft to further renew its twin-aisle fleet.

With the announcement of the leasing agreement, Chai Eamsiri, the chief executive officer (CEO) of THAI, noted that this marks one other significant milestone with the carrier’s continuing relationship with AerCap. The brand new-generation aircraft will enable THAI to swiftly adapt to the evolving market demands while also enhancing its operational capability and offering exceptional levels of comfort for its passengers, added Eamsiri.

The newest order features a deal for GEnx engines, marking THAI’s shift from the Trent 1000 to the GEnx for its 787 fleet.
Renewing its long-haul fleet
In its Q3 2023 financial report, the airline said that it could add five Airbus A350-900 aircraft to its fleet in the following quarter to support the ever-growing travel demand stemming from the recovery of the airline industry.
Currently, the airline operates the Airbus A330-300, A350-900, Boeing 777-200ER, 777-300ER, 787-8, and 787-9 aircraft in its long-haul fleet, with a mean age of 10.1 years, in accordance with ch-aviation data. Its oldest widebodies are the five 777-200ERs, with a mean age of 17 years.

In August 2023, THAI began selling its six Airbus A380 aircraft in an ‘as-is, where is’ condition, meaning that the potential latest owners would either must dismantle or fly the aircraft out of their storage locations in Thailand. In Q1 2023, the airline reclassified its A380-related liabilities from lease to payable liabilities, meaning they became short-term payable liabilities for the airline.
