Launching a brand new route from Fort Myers
Ultra-low-cost-carrier Spirit Airlines, in the midst of a pending merger with JetBlue, has shaken up its Florida operations significantly. In response to data from Cirium, Spirit plans to chop 4 routes from Orlando International Airport in December and has drastically shifted other Florida operations. This week’s filing of knowledge shows that Spirit intends to launch a brand new path to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in December.

Starting on December 15, Spirit has 4 weekly flights from Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers to Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The brand new flight leaving Florida will operate as NK375 and depart at 16:00. The short 2h45m flight will land at 19:45 local time on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The flight back to Florida will operate on two different schedules, as NK376. On most days in December, the flight will depart San Juan at 20:35 and arrive in Florida at 22:30. But on Mondays, December 18 and 25, the flight will leave San Juan at 19:00 and land in Fort Myers at 20:55.

Eleven American carriers connect Puerto Rico to the continental US, and Spirit has the fourth-largest market share, only barely behind Frontier Airlines. JetBlue has the biggest market share, with 1,651 flights of the 7,961 scheduled in December. In response to Cirium, Spirit has 928 flights scheduled to San Juan in December. Thirteen mainland United States airports are connected to Puerto Rico with nonstop flights on Spirit, with Orlando having 4 day by day flights in each direction, greater than some other Spirit route.

4 aircraft types are deployed to Orlando: the Airbus A319, A320, A320neo, and A321. The A320 is probably the most used aircraft from Orlando with 45 flights, followed by the A320neo with 39 flights, 36 on the A321, and just 4 on the A319.

The second-busiest San Juan route departs from Newark Liberty International Airport, with 50 scheduled flights from Newark and 49 in the other way. The Airbus A320s are used on the EWR-SJU route, which can operate day by day in December until the thirteenth when service might be available twice day by day. In each directions, Spirit has 18,018 seats available between the cities.
If Miami and Fort Lauderdale were counted as one, Spirit’s second-busiest market could be there, as each airport has day by day service to San Juan. Each airports are connected to SJU with the Airbus A321s.
