A scheduled cargo flight from Cologne to Shanghai required a diversion to Delhi en route. Nevertheless, the reasoning behind the unexpected visit to India stays unclear.
UPS flight 5X10, operated by a Boeing 747-8 Freighter with the registration N626UP and Serial Number 65781, appears to have hovered across the Pakistan / India border before making its descent into Delhi, more likely to burn fuel and weight before touching down at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).
After being airborne for roughly two hours, at 22:40 UTC, flight 5X214 suddenly turned towards the northeast as if it was about to fly back to mainland Europe. Nevertheless, about five minutes later, the Boeing B747-8 began its descent towards Keflavik International Airport (KEF); flight 5X214 rapidly descended from 30,000 ft to three,300 in only 14 minutes.
At 23:06 UTC, the Boeing B747-8F safely landed on the Icelandic airport. Flight 5X214 was parked at a protected distance from other aircraft. Moreover, for security reasons, some industrial flights certain for Keflavik were diverted, while others had to attend on the holding point while police inspected the freighter jumbojet.
