Qatar Airways and the oneworld Alliance
Airline alliances offer quite a few benefits to airlines. The first advantage of alliance membership is the flexibility to offer customers with an expanded route network, offering more travel opportunities. It is not any surprise that many renowned airlines worldwide are a part of these global alliances.
In 1999, the oneworld Alliance took flight with its pioneering members, including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas. Today, this global alliance boasts 13 member airlines. Today, the oneworld Alliance connects over 900 destinations across 170 territories, featuring access to quite a few airport lounges.

Along the way in which, Qatar Airways has turn out to be the second-largest member within the alliance. The airline has expanded from 125 to 163 destinations and doubled its fleet from 125 to 259 aircraft. The one airline with an even bigger network on this alliance is American Airlines, offering over 330 destinations. Commenting on the 10-year anniversary, Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker emphasized that the Doha-based airline is the “key driver” of the alliance, stating:
“We try to offer oneworld passengers with a world-class travel experience inside our extensive global network, with key connectivity to Europe, Australasia, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Indian subcontinent.
“Our alliance’s achievements and efforts are nothing wanting industry-leading, and I firmly consider in our ability to develop a dynamic future led by a brand new generation of aviation professionals and pioneers in sustainability. This worthwhile milestone reinforces our dedication to connecting people, destinations and cultures.”
Al Baker’s exit from Qatar Airways and continued leadership at oneworld
In surprising news, Akbar Al Baker, the long-serving CEO of Qatar Airways, has recently stepped down from his leadership position. Nevertheless, no reason was given for this decision. Akbar Al Baker has been on the helm of the airline group for 27 years since 1997. His last day because the airline’s CEO will probably be on November 5, 2023, and Badr Mohammed Al-Meer will succeed Al Baker because the airline’s latest CEO.

While serving because the chief executive of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al Baker was appointed to a leadership position throughout the oneworld Alliance. In 2021, Al Baker was named the Governing Board Chairman of oneworld, succeeding former Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce. Commenting on the appointment, Al Baker said on the time:
