ITA Airways is officially canceling the route connecting Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP) and Recent York John F. Kennedy International (JFK) on January 8, 2024, in line with a report by the Italian newspaper .
Scrapping a long-haul route
Currently operated 4 times per week onboard ITA Airways’ Airbus A330 aircraft, the Milan-Recent York route shall be canceled firstly of 2024. This can put an official end to the airline’s presence at Milan Malpensa Airport, where it currently only operates one service, the transoceanic 3,995-mile flight to Recent York. ITA Airways will proceed to operate from Milan Linate Airport (LIN).

Why cancel this route?
ITA Airways entered a really contested city pair when launching the Milan Malpensa-Recent York route. It’s a route currently served by 4 additional carriers beyond ITA Airways, with 27 weekly flights and eight,095 seats available (one in every eight seats is obtainable by the Italian flag carrier).
American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates (through a fifth freedom authorization to operate the Dubai-Milan-Recent York route), and Neos also operate in the town pair. American, Delta, and Emirates offer each day flights on this route, while Neos only has two weekly flights onboard its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.
This saturation of the market, plus the dearth of feeder connectivity for ITA Airways in Milan Malpensa to fill the aircraft seats, has made the route unprofitable for the corporate, in line with a report by the Italian newspaper.
Keeping Rome Fiumicino because the airline’s hub
Having a standalone long-haul route from an airport is odd enough, so canceling the route is a clever move from ITA Airways. Furthermore, the corporate is trying to streamline its operations, because it is ready to enter a brand new phase in its history with Lufthansa Group as certainly one of the important shareholders of the Italian company.

On this latest phase, ITA Airways will employ Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) because the airline’s important hub, particularly for long-haul operations. From Rome, ITA Airways serves 12 long-haul destinations: Boston, Recent Delhi, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Tokyo Haneda, Washington, Recent York JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Male, and San Francisco. The one other long-haul flight the airline had outside of Fiumicino was Milan’s service to JFK.
Keeping the Milan Linate service
ITA Airways just isn’t leaving Milan. The corporate will proceed to operate flights from Milan Linate Airport, which serves as its regional hub, although the airport has some restrictions, including no flights beyond 1,500 kilometers.

ITA Airways operates 515 weekly flights from Milan Linate, serving 19 destinations. Ten of those are domestic destinations (with 365 weekly flights, and the important routes being to Rome Fiumicino, Cagliari, Catania, Palermo, and Naples. The remaining are short-haul international flights to European destinations (150 weekly flights to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, London City and London Heathrow, and Stuttgart).
