Summary
- WestJet will launch a brand new long-haul route from Calgary to Seoul starting in May 2024.
- The market was last served on a seasonal basis by Korean Air in 2010.
- It comes shortly after it announced Calgary to Keflavik, its only long-haul service from the Alberta hub that can use the 737 MAX 8.
WestJet could have nine long-haul routes from its Calgary hub next summer, based on its network plan as of December fifteenth. It’s since it has added Seoul Incheon, its second Asian route and its first time in South Korea.
WestJet previously announced Calgary-Keflavik. It got here concurrently the airline, which previously had said it could only deal with Calgary, revealed routes from Eastern Canada to Europe, returning to that market.
Calgary to Seoul is coming
WestJet will launch the route on May 14th, 2024. With three flights on its 320-seat Boeing 787-9s, its sole widebody type, it’s scheduled as follows, with all times local. The frequency is decent to start out.
- Calgary to Seoul: 17:55-20:45+1
- Seoul to Calgary: 22:45-18:15 (same-day arrival)

WestJet may even deal with gaining transit traffic to/from wider Canada, although schedules will limit what is on the market. The biggest markets might be superb, though. In 2019, Seoul-Canada had 470,000+ roundtrip passengers, including those that flew non-stop.
A number of US routes will connect in each directions, while traffic with codeshare partner Korean Air will provide more passengers. Freight demand, which rarely gets mentioned, is prone to be considerable.
Long-haul network from Calgary
As of December fifteenth and subject to alter, WestJet’s long-haul network from Calgary is as follows. The 787 might be used on all routes except Keflavik. The three,199-mile (5,148 km) airport pair will see its 737 MAX 8s.
