A United Airlines Boeing 787 was forced to divert from its planned flight path, landing in Chicago, Illinois, the US, after the flight crew reported a security issue onboard the aircraft. Reportedly, there was a bomb threat onboard the flight.
Potential bomb threat
In a press release, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that United Airlines flight UA1533 safely landed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) greater than an hour and a half after the flight had departed Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). It landed at ORD at 7:30.
The airline deployed a Boeing 787-10, registered as N12006, to operate the flight between EWR and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Before it crossed the Midwest, the flight crew reported a security issue onboard the aircraft, prompting the diversion to ORD, added the regulator.

Meanwhile, ABC7 Chicago reported that a flight attendant found a bomb threat written in the lavatory of the 787-10, with the local Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office telling the publication that there was no imminent threat to the security of the general public or the airport.
The Boeing 787-10 left ORD at around 14:54 and landed at LAX at around 18:57 local time, data from the flight tracking website ADS-B Exchange showed. Meanwhile, Flightradar24 records showed that the aircraft is scheduled to depart LAX and operate flight UA923 to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) on February 22 and a return flight on the next day.

United Airlines’ domestic widebody network

Meanwhile, San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and ORD must have 83, 81, and 79 United Airlines domestic one-way flights with the 787 through the month.

FAA regulations highlighted that air traffic control (ATC) should immediately inform their supervisor or the ability air traffic manager in case of a bomb threat from any source. In case the potential danger is general in nature, ATC should handle it as ‘Suspicious activity.’

Subsequently, if the threat targets a selected aircraft, controllers should advise the pilot concerning the threat (if needed) and inform the flight crews that the FAA can provide assistance from an aviation explosives expert employed with the regulator, who’s on call in any respect times.
