The brand new hirings can be made in accordance with Avianca’s existing collective bargaining agreements. Avianca currently employs 12,400 individuals with indefinite-term contracts, of which greater than 8,000 are in Colombia. The method will depend upon Avianca’s network expansion, the agility of the authorities in approving the doorway of recent aircraft and personnel, and what Avianca deems ‘the fair distribution of slots’. The carrier added that it can value previous experience and provides priority to former employees of other airlines.
Bringing in talent from bankrupt carriers
Particularly, Avianca is prioritizing the hiring of employees of bankrupt carriers Viva Air and Ultra Air. These two Colombian ultra-low-cost airlines ceased operations in February and March 2023 after facing a financial crisis. Notably, Viva Air was set to merge with Avianca, a move that was delayed by an absence of presidency approval and ultimately canceled by Avianca following a radical review of the requisites set by the Colombian government.
