Getting the balance right between demand and capability is the lifeblood of an airline’s profitability, and that has never been more vital than now. Airlines lost billions of dollars throughout the pandemic, and while they’re clawing a few of that back, there continues to be an extended technique to go before balance sheets look healthy.
Finding the best balance
Given those competing pressures, it’s unsurprising that many airlines are keeping a good rein on capability and moving it around to where it may be best utilized. Such is the case with Avelo Airlines, which announced yesterday that it was suspending flights out of Mobile International Airport in March.

The news got here in an announcement from the Mobile Airport Authority and arrived around seven months after Avelo began direct flights from Mobile to Orlando. In line with AL.com, the airport authority said that Mobile is one in all eight airports where Avelo plans to suspend flights because it
The fact of running an airline is that services and routes could be canceled or suspended because aircraft are moveable assets, able to be deployed as demand dictates. While it’ll be disappointing for the airport and the area people, Avelo has already confirmed that the suspension is seasonal and will probably be back in Mobile in time for the height summer season.

Avelo will probably be back
The ultimate Avelo flights from Mobile to Orlando are scheduled for March 4, almost a yr because it was announced that Avelo would start operations from Mobile International. Avelo communications manager Courtney Goff said it was a difficult decision to seasonally suspend the service, adding that
Avelo is adopting one other trend we’re seeing rather more of on this post-pandemic recovery: reducing flight frequencies and routes to make sure the integrity of the airline’s overall schedules. Given the chaotic nature of the post-COVID restart, passengers want surety and never having their flights canceled on the last minute so Avelo is getting ahead of the curve during these quieter months.

Like everyone else in aviation, airport authorities have a balance sheet to repair and budgets to satisfy, but on this case, it seems Mobile International is taking an extended view of Avelo’s announcement. Mobile Airport Authority President Chris Curry said the suspension of flights wouldn’t impact the airport’s program of improvements, including the brand new terminal that will probably be ready for operations in the autumn of 2025.
Actually, Curry is greater than optimistic and thanked Avelo for the service it has provided to the community, and said he looks forward to the airline’s eventual return to Mobile. With the brand new terminal and access works ongoing, he added that when Avelo returns, it’ll “find a fair more welcoming environment for his or her valued customers.”
