And because it happened, Avelo Airlines announced this recent route at Tweed-Latest Haven Airport earlier this morning. The announcement was followed by a celebration that included Puerto Rican food and entertainment by Movimiento Cultural Bomba Band amidst a backdrop of Puerto Rican flags and red, white & blue balloons.
In attendance were several leaders inside Avelo Airlines like Chief Financial Officer Hunter Keay, members of the business and native communities, and native and state politicians, like Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. US Senator Richard Blumenthal was also present for the event, as he highlighted the importance of the brand new route:
“This recent route is a major milestone for Avelo, but additionally a giant win for Connecticut’s sizeable Puerto Rican population who now have one other inexpensive and convenient option to travel home to see family and friends. I even have been pleased to see Avelo’s growth over the past two years and can proceed fighting to advance our state’s air travel infrastructure and native airports.”
Expanding from Tweed-Latest Haven
Since commencing service in Tweed-Latest Haven Regional Airport in November 2021, Avelo Airlines has flown greater than 1.3 million passengers on greater than 10,000 flights. With the addition of this recent path to Puerto Rico, the airline will now serve 18 non-stop destinations from Southern Connecticut spanning seven states and one US territory – all inside an ambitious span of just two years.
Considering Tweed-Latest Haven Airport has and continues to be a major base for Avelo Airlines will likely connect the airport with additional recent routes within the near future. And while it is not yet definite, the budget carrier is undoubtedly starting to expand its route network to destinations beyond the continental US, with Puerto Rico being an awesome start.

The airline otherwise has a watch for more destinations within the Caribbean and can be substantially keen on flying to destinations in Mexico, although such expansions are prone to only begin next 12 months. And whether or not it would be Tweed-Latest Haven Airport that gets these routes stays to be seen, because the airline stays focused on long-term sustainable growth.
Bottom line
For a comparatively young budget carrier like Avelo Airlines, expanding beyond the continental US is just two years quite a well-achieved milestone. Because the airline focuses on turning popular leisure destinations into bases with flights to and from small and mid-sized cities, it will be interesting to see where else Avelo Airlines will connect San Juan with in the long run.
