Today, Avelo Airlines and Wilmington Airport (ILG) announced the launch of eight latest routes from the airport, marking the most important expansion within the airport’s history.
With over 100,000 travelers expected to go through ILG this summer, Wilmington Airport is emerging as a well-liked alternative to the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

The destinations that Avelo has launched service to are Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (MYR), Nashville, Tennessee (BNA), Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina (RDU), Savannah, Georgia (SAV), Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM), Charleston, South Carolina (CHS), Daytona Beach, Florida (DAB), and Greenville, South Carolina (GSP).
A day to recollect
Through the inaugural flight between Wilmington, Delaware, and Wilmington, North Carolina, Avelo’s Head of Communications Jim Olson surprised all 150 passengers with a free roundtrip ticket on the carrier that might be used anytime this summer.
Notably, Avelo selected to inaugurate their latest service at Wilmington by flying to a different city with the identical name, much as Breeze Airways did earlier this month when launching service from Charleston, West Virginia, to Charleston, South Carolina.

In an announcement regarding the expansion at ILG, Avelo CEO Andrew Levy had the next words to share:
“Since arriving at Wilmington Airport in February, it’s abundantly clear travelers from across the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region value the inexpensive, convenient, and reliable air service Avelo offers. There’s also no ambiguity that the fast, easy, and travel-friendly small hometown airport experience ILG offers is playing an equally necessary role inspiring people from across the greater Philadelphia region to travel with us.”
Clearly, Avelo is hoping that passengers across the greater Philadelphia area will decide to fly out of Wilmington with a view to capitalize on the carrier’s inexpensive fares.
Thomas J. Cook, Executive Director of the Delaware River and Bay Authority, also relayed his excitement for the brand new service in an announcement:
“With the kickoff of Avelo’s service to eight latest destinations today, Wilmington Airport now offers nonstop flights to 13 destinations, probably the most within the history of our airport. Our focus is to be the airport of alternative for people in Delaware, South Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland who seek low fares, quality service and a convenient airport experience.”
The director anticipates an economic boom to your entire region will accompany Avelo’s latest inexpensive services to a wide range of destinations.
Avelo’s consistent expansion
This latest expansion at Wilmington stands as one other in an extended line of network development moves made by the carrier this summer. Just a couple of weeks ago, the carrier inaugurated service from Kalispell, Montana to Burbank, California.
Moreover, these routes are one other example of Avelo’s modern business model: the airline is aiming to supply inexpensive service between secondary markets which might be currently underserved.

Nonetheless, there are some challenges with this model, lots of which might be seen within the carrier’s newest expansion in Wilmington. It’s not fully certain that travelers will fly from Delaware as an alternative of the way more convenient Philadelphia Airport, despite lower fares.
Moreover, among the destinations the ultra-low-cost carrier is serving are non-traditional, and it should be interesting to see just what number of seats Avelo is capable of fill on these routes.
