Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) plans to start demolishing Terminal 1 in April 2027 and targets December 2030 to complete its replacement. The reported proposal would raise the terminal’s annual passenger capacity from 15 million to 20 million.

Key details

  • The replacement terminal is planned to include 109 check-in counters, 15 passenger screening lanes and five transfer screening lanes.
  • MIAL plans to expand Terminal 2’s north-west pier for domestic traffic during construction, with service expected in March 2029.
  • MIAL has proposed temporarily shifting about five million passengers a year, including international passengers, to Navi Mumbai International Airport. IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air have reportedly arranged to move international operations representing around three million passengers annually.
  • MIAL reportedly asked other airlines to submit transition plans by November 3, aiming to shift the planned passenger volume by Northern Summer 2027.
  • The reported plan would raise Mumbai airport’s overall annual capacity from about 55 million passengers to about 65 million. MIAL said international traffic moved to Navi Mumbai would return to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after Terminal 1’s expansion.

The proposed Terminal 1 would have 25 contact stands, compared with seven today.

Why it matters

The proposed replacement would add passenger capacity at Mumbai airport, while a Terminal 2 pier expansion would provide space for domestic traffic during the construction period. The planned shift to Navi Mumbai would also involve international operations from three named airlines.
