Almost every little thing in an airline is turned back right into a performance metric: fuel used, passengers carried, freight within the hold and the way much beer was consumed. The tip of the 12 months is at all times an excellent time so as to add every little thing up and see what worked and what didn’t, which is precisely what Air Recent Zealand did this week.
A deep dive into every little thing
In its first unrestricted 12 months of travel post-COVID, Air Recent Zealand carried 15.9 million passengers on 169,835 domestic and international flights in 2023. That in comparison with 12.3 million customers on 152,000 flights in 2022, although there have been still border restrictions for a part of that 12 months.

While fleet data can change from week to week, the info from ch-aviation shows that Air Recent Zealand has a fleet of 108 aircraft, including 17 Airbus A320-200s, six A320neos, 11 A321neos, eight Boeing 777-300ERs, and 14 787-9 Dreamliners. It also has a turboprop fleet of 29 ATR 72-600s and 23 De Havilland Dash 8-Q300s.
The aircraft numbers are significant because they contextualize what was consumed during those 169,835 flights. Air Recent Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty said that Kiwis embraced their love of travel in 2023, and overseas visitors had Recent Zealand on their bucket list.
“We welcomed greater than 10.6 million travellers onboard our domestic flights, a notable rise from 9.4 million customers in 2022. Our international routes also saw significant growth, with greater than 5.3 million customers compared with 2.9 million in 2022.”
Feeding those 15.9 million passengers saw the tireless cabin crews deliver 6.7 million meals, 5.7 million cookies and 17 million of Air Recent Zealand’s iconic sweets. Flying is clearly thirsty work because passengers consumed 2.8 million glasses of soppy drink, 2.1 million of juice, 1.2 million of white wine, 1.1 million of red wine, 934,000 glasses of beer and 42,000 of whiskey.

As an exporting island nation, Recent Zealand relies heavily on air freight for exports and imports, with the airline ferrying greater than 30,000 tonnes of exports to international markets in 2023. That included 6,900 tonnes of seafood, 5,500 tonnes of fresh produce, 2,400 tonnes of meat, 100 tonnes of pharmaceuticals and emergency relief supplies and 16 tonnes of priceless goods.
Transporting pets is one other numbers game, and while dogs clearly dominate, no cats are mentioned. In 2023, the airlines carried 324,507 Dogs, 708 Kiwi, 104 Guinea Pigs, 61 Turtles, 21 Tuataras, eight Capybaras, eight Geese and one Scorpion.
Notable events
In February, the airline arrange temporary flights between Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay to support communities impacted by Cyclone Gabriel. Between February 26 and June 10, those flights carried 5,700 passengers, including emergency employees and contractors. After being sent to the Mojave Desert in 2020, Air Recent Zealand welcomed the ultimate 4 Boeing 777-300ERs back in May 2023 after 855 days under the sun. August was the month Air Recent Zealand finally said goodbye to its Teal livery when the last Q300 was painted with the now familiar black and white scheme.
In November, Air Recent Zealand partnered with an area designer, Emilia Wickstead, to create the airline’s recent uniform, with the ultimate designs expected to be revealed in early 2025. Because the 12 months ended, the airline’s team of Snacksperts delivered their verdict on the brand new snack menu that can soon be featured on flights.
