Fuel usage problems prompted a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by Air Latest Zealand to divert on Friday. The aircraft was flying from Auckland Airport (AKL) to Chicago O’Hare International (ORD) and returned to the north island of Latest Zealand to undergo further inspection.
The incident likely caused some passengers to be displaced as Air Latest Zealand is currently working to rebook them on one other flight. Accommodations have been reportedly offered for the reason that carrier’s service to the Windy City only occurs a number of times per week.
Details of the incident
In keeping with ch-aviation, the aircraft involved within the incident is ZK-NZQ, a four-year-old 787-9. The plane was operating Air Latest Zealand flight 26 (NZ26) and was scheduled to depart Auckland Airport (AKL) at 20:10 on Friday, June twenty third. Nevertheless, FlightAware data indicates the aircraft left its gate 47 minutes late at 20:57.
ZK-NZQ took off at 21:17 and headed east before turning north to start its journey over the Pacific. Around 12 minutes after takeoff, the Dreamliner reached an altitude of 20,000 feet after which reached cruising altitude at 33,000 feet. The plane then turned barely east and maintained its course for about quarter-hour, reaching a speed of 632 mph.

At around 22:02, nearly an hour into its journey, the plane turned south to divert to Auckland, based on FlightAware. In an announcement, Air Latest Zealand Head of Flight Operations, Hugh Pearce, confirmed the incident to Easy Flying.
“Flight NZ26 from Auckland to Chicago returned to Auckland last night on account of a fuel usage discrepancy discovered just over an hour after departure. As a precaution, the aircraft returned to Auckland so it could undergo an engineering inspection.”
Returning to Auckland
NZ26 remained over the Pacific for about an hour before it descended to an altitude of 18,000 feet and continued for roughly 20 minutes because it got here closer to the island. Once overland, the aircraft descended and passed the airport to circle back and line up for its approach. ZK-NZQ landed back at AKL at 00:37 on Saturday, then arrived on the gate at 1:07, based on FlightAware.

Since Air Latest Zealand only operates the AKL-ORD route thrice weekly, the incident likely disrupted passengers attempting to get to Chicago as soon as possible. Although they is probably not rebooked on one other flight for a number of days, the airline appeared to assist passengers with their needs.
Pearce said.
A well-liked route
It’s unclear how long it should take for ZK-NZQ to be inspected and for the problems to be resolved. The aircraft has not flown for the reason that incident, but based on FlightAware, it’s scheduled to operate a three-hour flight to Nadi, Fiji, on Sunday as ANZ952.
Last October, Air Latest Zealand returned its Chicago service after taking a hiatus on account of pandemic-related restrictions. The route proved its popularity amongst American tourists in 2019, with visitors from the US spending $1.5 billion in Latest Zealand throughout the yr.
