Expanding the Scandinavian network
Over the past weekend, airlines switched to IATA’s winter schedules, but as airlines make plans months prematurely, preparations are well underway for summer 2024. Today, Air Canada announced a major expansion to its network for next summer, adding Stockholm flights from Montreal and Toronto. Though each hub will only be connected to the Swedish city a couple of times weekly, this shall be the primary time the Canadian flag carrier serves Sweden.

Thirteen years ago, Air Canada introduced its first flights to Scandinavia. Now, along with latest flights to Stockholm, Air Canada will expand its flights to Copenhagen, which, up until last 12 months, were only operated from Toronto. Air Canada will fly to CPH from Toronto every day between May 1-October 31. From Montreal, the route will return earlier, on May 2, and can operate as much as five times weekly in June.
“We proceed our strategy of constructing international scale at our Toronto and Montreal global hubs and we’re more than happy to deepen Air Canada’s longstanding presence in Northern Europe with the addition of flights to Stockholm. Toronto and Montreal are the third and fourth largest trans-Atlantic gateways, and we proceed strengthening our hubs’ reach with our increased services to Scandinavia.” – Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada
Air Canada’s recent expansions aren’t limited to Scandinavia. Just this week, the carrier resumed a preferred fifth-freedom route from London to Mumbai, which is able to run through March 29, 2024. Over the weekend, the airline’s second Dubai route was launched from Vancouver. The Vancouver – Dubai route will operate 4 times weekly through the Northern Hemisphere’s winter on the Boeing 787-9.
Other routes from North America to Stockholm
In keeping with Cirium, only three airlines have flights scheduled from North America to Stockholm in June 2024: SAS, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. Air Canada doesn’t yet reflect within the system because it was announced today. Between the three carriers, there are 254 flights scheduled in each directions. SAS, the Scandinavian carrier, has the biggest market share, with 147 of the 254 flights. Delta has 56, and United has 51.

In Canada, the Scandinavian carrier flies to Toronto, home to Air Canada. Delta has only one route from John F. Kennedy International Airport in Recent York City, operated by its Boeing 767-300s. United deploys its Boeing 757-200s from Newark to Stockholm.
