Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said discussions were underway to assess whether Syria could join the Mecca Pact. His remarks at the IISS Manama Dialogue in Bahrain described consideration of membership, not an agreement to join.
Key details
- Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the pact on August 7; the year was not specified.
- A joint statement by the signatories described provisions for a mutual response to an armed attack on any member and expanded defense cooperation.
- Al-Shaibani said Syria regards Gulf and GCC security as part of its own regional security and expressed support for Gulf governments and populations.
Asaad al-Shaibani said Syria was assessing possible entry into the Mecca Pact.
Why it matters
The pact’s stated mutual-response provision would connect the security commitments of its three signatories. Syria’s assessment of possible membership places its regional security position alongside that framework, while leaving its status outside the pact unchanged for now.
