Joby Aviation has begun piloted electric air taxi flights in Florida as part of a week-long campaign linked to the U.S. eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. The planned operations cover Tampa Bay, Orlando and Florida’s Space Coast, where the flights are intended to assess how electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft can operate at existing airports.
Key details
- The reported campaign opened with a flight between Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg and Tampa International Airport.
- Joby plans to operate at Orlando International Airport, including a planned landing near Terminal C and the airport train station at a new vertiport.
- Routes and procedures for the Orlando operations drew on two years of simulation work involving the FAA, NASA, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority and local air traffic controllers.
- The campaign is expected to include a flight at Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility, timed to coincide with the UP Summit aviation industry event.
- Florida’s project is one of eight selected nationally for the eIPP.
- FDOT’s program has three phases covering passenger transport, cargo delivery, automation and medical response.
- Florida is developing SunTrax Air, an advanced air mobility test campus near Interstate 4, with testing planned to begin by the end of 2026.
Joby’s Florida flight campaign spans Tampa Bay, Orlando and the Space Coast.
Why it matters
The flights will give Joby and Florida transportation officials experience with electric air taxis at established airports, including a major hub with connections to an airport train station. That work can inform planning for a proposed statewide intercity air taxi network.
What happens next
The Florida campaign will extend from Tampa Bay to Orlando and the Space Coast, while SunTrax Air moves toward planned testing by the end of 2026. Which Florida location would you most like to see connected by an electric air taxi?
