American Airlines has unveiled an Airbus A321 showing off the Allegheny Airlines heritage livery. Allegheny Airlines was a regional company that operated between 1952 and 1979 before rebranding to US Airways and eventually merging under American Airlines. Let’s investigate further.
History looks good on the Airbus A321
The US carrier announced today that an Airbus A321, registration N579UW, had rolled out of the paint hangar and into the sunshine in Amarillo, Texas. This aircraft has the Allegheny Airlines logo painted on its tail, in addition to a blue stripe across the fuselage, reminiscing of Allegheny’s livery.
As reported by Airline Geeks, the Allegheny retro jet joins an inventory of recently unveiled special liveries that features American Airlines’ PSA Airlines, Piedmont, and US Airways themes.
Aviation A2Z lists eight heritage jets inside the American Airlines fleet, plus two not officially designed under the heritage category. These jets have liveries remembering US Airways, PSA Airlines, Piedmont, Allegheny, America West, TWA, Reno Air, and AirCal, in addition to an American Airlines Astrojet and an American Airlines bare metal liveries.
Earlier this yr, American Airlines said it will move the heritage liveries from the already painted Airbus A319s to newer A321s. This has already happened with the US Airways livery (A321-231, registration N579UW) and now with the Allegheny Airlines livery (from an A319-112 registration N745VJ to the A321 N579UW).
The aircraft
American Airlines painted the Allegheny Airlines livery on an Airbus A321-200. This aircraft is 9.43 years old and was delivered on May 16, 2014, in keeping with data from ch-aviation. It has the capability to hold 190 passengers in a 3 class configuration, including 135 in economy, 35 in economy plus, and 20 in business.
The aircraft was first ordered by US Airways in 1997, which makes it quite a superb selection since US Airways is the rebranded Allegheny Airlines that later merged with American Airlines.
The history of Allegheny Airlines
Allegheny Airlines was a carrier that may trace its history back to 1939 when it was often called All American Aviation Company, a firm providing mail delivery. It was renamed in 1949 to All American Airways before being rebranded again as Allegheny Airlines in 1953.
Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Allegheny operated under this brand until October 28, 1979, when it was rebranded to USAir and later US Airways. The change of name got here after the approval of the Airline Deregulation Act, which enabled Allegheny to expand its route network beyond the northeastern United States, where it was mostly based.
Through its phase as Allegheny Airlines, the corporate operated twin-engine aircraft corresponding to the Convair 340 and the Fairchild F-27. It was also often called “Agony Air” on account of because the Chicago Tribune reported in 1994.
US Airways later merged with American Airlines and operated its last flight in October 2015.
